Will Ferrell and Tina Fey on the making of Megamind

They both cut their teeth on the legendary Saturday Night Live comedy show, but Tina Fey and Will Ferrell have never worked together – until now. The pair lend their voices to new animated movie Megamind (out today) where Will plays a bored villain who falls for Tina’s TV reporter Roxanne – as does Brad Pitt’s superhero Metro Man.
Here, the gag-cracking pair tell us more about making the movie.
Will, do you have anything in common with your blue alter ego Megamind?
Will: There are so many traits I share with this large blue character. I have a lot of tight leather pants in a vault like he does. There is also a part of my body that is blue, although I can’t go into detail. It’s just a genetic defect.
What’s it like being the star of Megamind?
Will: I don’t consider myself to be front and centre of this fine cast. But I look at the poster and I guess I am. I haven’t done a lot of animation before. I loved this premise which felt so original. It’s about no matter how much you screw up your life, you can fix it.
Tina, you are famous for your impressions of Sarah Palin – what would she think of Megamind?
Tina: Well, I’m pretty sure that she would say Megamind needs to be destroyed because he’s a danger to freedom.
Are you glad you decided to play Palin on Saturday Night Live?
Tina: Sometimes I feel like the ghost of Sarah Palin is following me. That’s terrifying. At the same time, I think playing her was one of the luckiest things that ever happened to me.
What was it like working with Will?
Tina: We were encouraged to improvise. Will and I were lucky we could do sessions together. One of the great things about doing animated movies is that you don’t have to dress up or put on make-up.
Will: I didn’t just show up in T-shirts and sweats like Tina. I had full hair and makeup.
Will, did you bring your children to the recording studio while you were doing your lines for Megamind?
Will: I did, and they loved me for it. I was a hit with my kids. They are intrigued that dad is in a movie with a big blue head. There’s a poster with the Megamind baby on it. My three-year-old is fascinated and that’s because the baby has so little to do with me.
Megamind is also a bit evil. On the other hand, Brad Pitt is the voice behind the hunky Metro Man. Both of them have a strong crush on Roxanne. So, which one of these would you pick as your love interest, Tina?
Tina: Oh, that’s easy, I’d go for Megamind. He’s very smart and I think the purple undertones of his skin are quite attractive. He’s also smaller than me, which means that I could physically dominate him.
Will: I am a little jealous of him, because I wish I had his waistline. It’s hard to keep the weight off as you get older, right?
Tina, what do you think of Roxanne’s body in Megamind?
Tina: I think that I look like a young Sharon Osbourne in this film. I like her short hair and beautiful curves. And the big plus is that she has an ample bottom.
Will, do you ever wish you were an unknown, normal person again like Metro Man?
Will: I can identify, which begs the question, ‘Would I like to retreat into obscurity?’ I don’t think about those things. That’s a great question for Brad Pitt, who isn’t here. But I think I will be escorted into obscurity soon. It will probably be a police escort.
